Visual artist living and working in Durham, NC

I was fortunate to grow up in a home where art was practiced and appreciated, and I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I still often work on the drafting table built by my father and used by everyone in my family.

Traditional art always held a special attraction for me and I was particularly drawn to the art of Ingres and Vermeer. I received by degree in fine art in the 1970’s – a time when it was hard to find schools that taught in this style. This led me on my own search and I began to study the techniques of a wide variety of both old and contemporary masters.

I have worked to hone my technique and expand my knowledge of different media and methods. I find portraits to be especially rewarding because I enjoy the challenge of capturing the essence of individuals – not just their likenesses.

Most artists say that the pursuit of art is a journey, and I agree. I am very grateful to family, friends and mentors who have offered encouragement and support on this journey, especially my husband Walt and daughter Julia.

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.
